The Federal Government is set to meet with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and other key stakeholders on Monday to discuss the strike notice issued by the union.

This was revealed by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, marking his one year in office. ASUU had previously issued a 21-day strike notice to the government, citing unresolved issues such as revitalization funds for public universities, payment of outstanding earned academic allowances, and the release of withheld salaries.

The Minister of Education mentioned that letters of invitation have been sent to ASUU leadership and other relevant organizations to attend the upcoming meeting. “Most of the issues raised by ASUU are being attended to. The issue of exit from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System has been resolved by the President, but bureaucracy has caused delays,” he added.

Mamman expressed optimism about the upcoming Monday meeting, saying, “by the time we meet on Monday, some of these issues would be discussed and resolved.”
He assured that President Bola Tinubu is committed to ensuring academic stability and will provide the necessary support to prevent any disruptions in education.

“Most of ASUU’s demands started in 1981, and every government has faced ASUU strikes,” the Minister said.

The minister emphasised that the government was committed to finding a lasting solution to the issues, saying, “we will do everything possible to make sure we don’t go on strike.”
