The Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar on Saturday tendered his resignation to President Bola Tinubu.
Abubakar was appointed in January 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
He was reappointed in December 2021.
Abubakar said he was at the State House on a routine briefing, during which he tendered his resignation letter.
“It’s a routine thing, from time to time to brief Mr. Presidnet on situations and today is no exception.
“After the briefing today, I actually tended my resignation, and Mr. President graciously approved and accepted the resignation.
“I thanked him for giving me the opportunity to serve Nigeria under his transformational leadership for a period, for an extended period of 15 months, which is very rare, by the way, to serve, to have the opportunity to serve two Presidents at a stretch or at a go.
“So, I thanked him very well, and I promised to remain professional as we are professionally dedicated to our country and to noble causes”, Abubakar told State House reporters.
He is a retired career Foreign Service officer, who till his appointment served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs/International Relations.
Abubakar had extensive experience working with the United Nations in peace support operations, mediation process, preventive diplomacy and good offices, as well as the promotion of good governance and respect for the rule of law and human rights.
He also briefly served as Senior Adviser at the Multinational Joint Task Force with headquarters in Ndjamena, Chad, before his appointment as SSAP.
Abubakar tool over the reins of the NIA after his predecessor, Ayo Oke, was suspended in April 2017 by former President Muhammadu Buhari over allegations of fraud.
Oke was later dismissed on October 30, 2017, following a probe into the allegations.
