The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has announced a seven-day warning strike starting from midnight on Monday, August 26, 2024. This decision comes in response to the ongoing abduction of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who was kidnapped nearly eight months ago.
NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, revealed the decision following an Emergency National Executive Council meeting. He emphasized that the strike is a total and complete action intended to draw attention to Dr. Popoola’s prolonged captivity. The strike will last for seven days and aims to pressure authorities into resolving the situation. “During the strike, there will be no concessions, and there will be no emergency care,” he added.

Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was kidnapped on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and nephew. Although her husband was released in March 2024, Dr. Popoola and her nephew continue to be held captive. Members of NARD have staged protests at tertiary hospitals nationwide to call for the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola.
