Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, have accused the Nigerian military of unlawfully detaining and torturing innocent civilians at Abacha Barracks in Abuja following the recent Arba’een Trek.

The group claims that troops arrested a broad range of individuals including bystanders, street vendors, and those not involved in the procession without cause. IMN alleges that detainees, both men and women, are being held without charges and subjected to severe torture twice a day.

At a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, IMN spokesperson Fatima Aliyu Adam disclosed that there is evidence of both torture and instances of blasphemy against Islam perpetrated by security personnel, which they plan to release soon.

The group has condemned the illegal detentions and abuse, demanding the immediate release of all those held. They also pledged to hold military leaders accountable for the alleged human rights violations occurring at Abacha Barracks and other facilities.

“We wish to alert the public that the Nigerian military has detained innocent people at Abacha Barracks, where they are being tortured repeatedly. We have credible evidence of this torture and blasphemous acts by security agents, which we will reveal within the next 24 hours.

“The egregious injustices inflicted on us and other Nigerians are beyond belief. We call on all conscientious individuals, whether within or outside the security forces, to challenge and expose these abuses. We demand the unconditional release of all detainees and an end to these unlawful practices,” the IMN said.
