NIMC Chief highlights crucial role of birth and NIN registration in Nigeria’s digital future

The Director General of the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote has underscored the vital importance of birth registration and the National Identification Number, NIN, in advancing Nigeria’s development agenda.

At the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative project Coker-Odusote described the collaboration between the NIMC and the National Population Commission, NPC, on digital birth registration as a significant milestone in the country’s journey toward a robust digital identity system.

The DG lauded the NPC for its efforts in accelerating and modernizing the birth registration process, noting that this initiative remains a key achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. She assured that NIMC would remain a committed partner in driving social and educational reforms across the nation.

“Birth registration is not only essential for individuals but also crucial for national development,” Coker-Odusote stated even as she highlighted how digital birth and NIN registration would enhance access to government services, including education, healthcare, and social benefits, thereby benefiting all Nigerians, especially children.

The NIMC Chief reaffirmed that birth registration is a fundamental right and an integral part of Nigeria’s development strategy. She called on civil society and international partners to support the initiative’s success, pledging that NIMC would continue to facilitate seamless NIN registration, particularly for children under 16 years.

Coker-Odusote also expressed gratitude to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her unwavering support in advancing the NIN and birth registration efforts in Nigeria.
