Five children, including three aged 12, have been arrested in the United Kingdom on suspicion of murdering an 80-year-old man, who succumbed to injuries after a violent assault in a park.
Leicestershire Police announced on Tuesday that a murder investigation has been launched following the elderly man’s death in the hospital from injuries sustained during the incident on Sunday evening.
The police have detained five young individuals, a 14-year-old boy, a 14-year-old girl, and three 12-year-olds (two girls and one boy)—on suspicion of murder. According to authorities, the attack occurred near the park entrance, and a group of youths fled the scene before emergency services arrived.

The police are appealing for any witnesses who were in the park or nearby areas at the time of the assault to come forward. Senior Investigating Officer, Inspector Emma Matts, stated, “tragically, with the passing of the victim last night, this is now being treated as a murder investigation. Officers are working swiftly to uncover the details of the attack, and several arrests have been made as we continue to piece together what happened. A scene preservation remains in place at the park as our investigation moves forward. Local officers are also conducting reassurance patrols and are available to speak with community members who may have concerns.”
Leicestershire Police also mentioned in a statement that they will be making a voluntary referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, due to prior contact with the victim.
