Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has tendered his resignation, joining a wave of top officials stepping down ahead of a significant government reshuffle.

Kuleba, a key figure in President Volodymyr Zelensky’s administration and Ukraine’s top diplomat, offered his resignation on Wednesday, just as another wave of Russian attacks claimed the lives of at least seven people, including a child.

Kuleba’s departure follows a series of high-profile resignations, including two vice premiers, three ministers, the head of the State Property Fund, and a senior official in the Presidential Office, all within the past 24 hours. The resignations come as Zelensky prepares for a critical visit to the United States, where he is expected to attend the United Nations General Assembly and meet with President Joe Biden later this month.

Although Zelensky has not provided a detailed explanation for the reshuffle, he emphasized in his recent address that the coming months will be crucial for Ukraine, and that the country’s institutions must be restructured to achieve essential outcomes.

Speculation suggests that Kuleba and other outgoing officials may be reassigned to new roles within the administration. The reshuffle occurs at a challenging moment for Ukraine, with its forces under mounting pressure on the eastern front lines, particularly around the strategically important city of Pokrovsk.

Ukraine’s parliament is expected to consider Kuleba’s resignation in an upcoming plenary session, Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk said on Telegram. Davyd Arakhamia, the majority leader of Ukraine’s parliament, indicated that over 50% of the Cabinet of Ministers’ staff will be replaced this week, with new appointments to follow shortly.

Among the other notable resignations is Oleksandr Kamyshin, the Minister for Strategic Industries, who oversaw weapons production and is reportedly set to take on another defense-related role. The resignations also include the ministers responsible for justice, the environment, and reintegration.

Zelensky’s reorganization appears to be a strategic move to bolster both foreign and domestic policy as Ukraine navigates the ongoing conflict and prepares to present a new “victory plan” to the US administration.
