Otunba Benedict Akika, a prominent aide to Governor Seyi Makinde and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State, has been kidnapped by gunmen on Wednesday night at his residence in Olohundaaba, Lagelu Local Government Area.

It was reported that Akika was taken from his Idi-Ape home along the Akobo Ojurin-Olohunda road in Ibadan.

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the incident, with Public Relations Officer SP Adewale Osifeso stating that investigations are underway.

“The investigation has begun, and we will provide updates as we progress,” Osifeso said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday.

Eyewitnesses described the abduction as a meticulously planned operation, with gunmen overpowering Akika’s security personnel before fleeing with him. Reports indicate that during the attack, the assailants not only abducted Akika but also shot and killed another individual. The identity of the deceased remains unconfirmed, but the violent act has heightened concerns about security in the area.

Akika, known for his significant role in supporting Governor Seyi Makinde’s campaigns and for his contributions to poverty alleviation and youth empowerment through his foundation, is a prominent figure in the PDP. His kidnapping has sparked fears of further violence and insecurity among local residents.

A community leader, who requested anonymity, urged security forces to intensify their efforts to capture the perpetrators and restore peace to the troubled area. “This act of terror has instilled fear in our community. We urgently call on the government and police to ensure the safe return of Chief Akika and to tackle this growing insecurity,” the leader said. The incident has caused widespread alarm and disruption within the community.

This incident is coming few weeks after Anambra State Commissioner of Youth Development, Mr. Patrick Aghamba and his wife were on kidnapped while on their way to Abuja for the wedding of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s daughter, Adaora, at the nation’s capital. Aghamba and his wife were said to be travelling in their private vehicle when they were reportedly ambushed, and kidnapped by gunmen.
