In the latest escalation of violence in the occupied West Bank, Israeli missiles have killed six Palestinians, including the son of a prominent jailed militant, Palestinian health officials report.

The overnight strikes in the northern West Bank town of Tubas targeted what Israel described as an “armed terrorist cell,” further intensifying the ongoing conflict that began with Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

The fatalities include Mohammed Zubeidi, the son of Zakaria Zubeidi, a well-known militant commander during the second Palestinian uprising in the early 2000s. Zakaria Zubeidi had gained notoriety for his involvement in a rare prison escape in 2021 before being recaptured and returned to prison.

The Israeli military claimed that the younger Zubeidi was part of a militant cell and had been involved in attacks against Israeli forces. The strikes are part of a broader series of operations Israel has been conducting in the West Bank, aimed at dismantling militant organizations and preventing potential attacks on Israeli citizens.

These recent incidents have heightened tensions in the region, which has seen significant violence since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. The conflict has resulted in over 40,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza and extensive devastation, with efforts to broker a ceasefire facing persistent challenges.
