The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has reported that operatives from the Department of State Services, DSS, have taken over its Abuja office in what the organization described as an “unlawful occupation.”

In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, SERAP revealed that DSS officers are demanding to meet with the organization’s directors. The human rights group condemned the action and called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, urging him to instruct the DSS to halt the “harassment, intimidation, and attack on the rights of Nigerians.”

The statement reads, “Officers from Nigeria’s State Security Service, SSS, are presently unlawfully occupying SERAP’s office in Abuja, asking to see our directors.

“President Tinubu must immediately direct the SSS to end the harassment, intimidation and attack on the rights of Nigerians.”

Credible News recalls that following the latest hike in fuel increment, SERAP, had urged President Bola Tinubu to reverse fuel price. In a letter dated 7 September 2024 and signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP claimed that the petrol price hike is illegal and unconstitutional.

SERAP noted that the petrol price hike represents a fundamental breach of constitutional guarantees and the country’s international human rights obligations, especially as citizens face worsening economic hardships.

SERAP has also requested that President Tinubu direct the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, and relevant anti-corruption agencies to investigate allegations of corruption and mismanagement within the NNPCL.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project was created in 2004 and registered as a non-governmental, non-profit organization under Nigerian laws.

Recognising the unexplored potential of international human rights law for increasing transparency, accountability and protection of economic and social rights in Nigeria, SERAP was created to promote these principles and values. The organization aims to use human rights law to encourage the government and others to address developmental and human rights challenges such as corruption, poverty, inequality and discrimination.
