Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty met with his Sudanese counterpart, Hussein Awad Ali, on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing conflict in Sudan and explore potential solutions.

The bilateral meeting, held at Tahrir Palace, focused on the political and security challenges in Sudan, which has been embroiled in a devastating war since mid-April 2023.

The conflict, primarily between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, has claimed approximately 15,000 lives and displaced around 8.5 million people, according to the United Nations. During the meeting, the two ministers underscored the importance of unifying Sudanese political and civil powers, preserving the country’s territorial integrity, and maintaining the functionality of state institutions.

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to working with all parties to end the violence and emphasized that any genuine political resolution must be driven by a Sudanese vision, free from external interference. He also stressed the role of international and regional institutions in facilitating the peace process.

In addition to political matters, the discussions addressed the humanitarian crisis, which the United Nations has described as the largest in the world today. Both ministers called for an immediate and sustainable cessation of military operations to ease the suffering of the Sudanese population.

This meeting is part of broader international efforts to mediate the conflict, with Egypt playing a central role by hosting conferences and facilitating intra-Sudanese dialogue. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has been actively coordinating with international and regional bodies such as the United Nations, the African Union, and the League of Arab States in pursuit of a lasting solution to the crisis.

The conflict in Sudan also carries significant regional implications. Neighboring countries, including South Sudan, are involved in negotiations to resolve related issues, such as the disruption of vital oil pipelines.

The meeting between the Egyptian and Sudanese foreign ministers represents a crucial step forward in the ongoing diplomatic efforts to restore peace and stability to Sudan.
