A severe flood in Kafanchan, Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State, has resulted in the deaths of two children, destroyed farmlands, and displaced hundreds of residents.
The Vice Chairman of Jema’a Local Government Area, Christy Usman, confirmed that the tragic incident followed intense rainfall in the region over the past few days.
In response to the disaster, the Kaduna State Flood Assessment Committee, led by Chief of Staff to Governor Uba Sani, Sani Kila, conducted a visit to the affected areas to evaluate the extent of the damage. During the visit, Kila urged residents to avoid building near waterways and to refrain from dumping waste into drainage systems to help reduce the risk of future flooding.
Kaduna State, located in the North-West zone, is one of the areas forecasted to experience flooding this season. So far, Sabon Gari, Zaria, Kaduna North, and Jema’a local government areas have been hit, with other regions on high alert.

The rising water levels have submerged roads in some communities in Kaduna North, forcing residents to use wooden canoes to navigate the floodwaters. The assessment team also visited affected areas in Kafanchan, where the flood had already caused fatalities and significant damage to farmlands in Jagindi, Atuku, Aso, and Bade wards.
In Sanga Local Government Area, five communities remain cut off due to a collapsed bridge, and several houses have been damaged by the heavy rains. The assessment committee is set to provide its findings and recommendations to Governor Uba Sani after completing its tour.
In the meantime, the Kaduna State Government is appealing for federal assistance to support flood-affected individuals and supplement the state’s relief efforts with additional aid.
