Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has inaugurated a new commodity farmers market aimed at reducing the skyrocketing prices of food items in the state.

Speaking at the launch event held at Ayegbaju Market in Osogbo, the governor, represented by Commissioner of Commerce and Industry, Bunmi Jenyo, called on farmers to sell their produce at reasonable prices, with minimal profit margins, to ease the financial burden on residents.

Governor Adeleke emphasized that the farmers’ market would allow for direct sales from farmers to consumers, thus eliminating middlemen and helping to curb the high cost of food. He expressed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of the people and explained that the rising cost of food items has been a major concern for the government.

“What we are doing today will automatically bring down the cost of farm produce as farmers will sell directly to the final consumers. The high price of food items which has made life unbearable for the common man has been given the government a sleepless night.

“The people’s Governor whose priority is the welfare of the masses, is highly delighted that something of this nature is coming up at the appropriate time. With this market on ground, people have the privilege of buying agricultural produce fresh and direct from farmers at affordable prices.

As part of the government’s support for this initiative, Governor Adeleke announced that farmers using the allocated shops within Ayegbaju International Market would be exempt from charges for the first three months. He encouraged other farmers’ associations and market traders to collaborate with the South-West Commodities Farmers’ Organization to ensure the success of the project.

The newly launched market will serve as a hub for farmers to sell fresh produce at affordable prices, bringing much-needed relief to Osun State residents.
