Popular Nigerian Afrobeats artist, Patoranking, has lost his sister, Chioma Onuabuchi and her husband in a tragic gas explosion, in Ebonyi State.
The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the incident and clarified that the explosion which tragically claimed the lives of Mr. and Mrs. George Onuabuchi in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State was caused by a gas cylinder, not an inverter battery as speculated.
DSP Joshua Ukandu, the Command’s spokesperson, disclosed that the incident occurred on August 25 in the Waterworks area of the Ebonyi State capital. Preliminary investigations disclosed that the explosion was the result of a gas leak in the couple’s home.
“The unfortunate event was reported to our personnel by concerned residents in the vicinity. While the victims were rushed to the hospital, neither survived. The wife, Chioma, succumbed to her injuries in late August, and her husband, George, passed away in early September,” Ukandu explained.
One of the neighbors of the couple, Nwokporo Victor Uchechukwu, said, “it happened in my street. We only heard the sound of an explosion in the afternoon. When we rushed to the compound, smoke was coming out of the new building with all the electronics destroyed, including the ceiling, doors, and windows damaged with glasses.

“At first we thought it was a gas cylinder explosion. Or may be any inverter; only God knows what was implanted in that house. It sounded like a bomb.”
A relative of the couple, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed the family’s deep grief, calling the incident a devastating loss. “They were a young couple with only one child. It’s a tragic end,” the relative shared.
The couple leaves behind a three-year-old son. The child was reportedly with his grandmother at the time of the incident.
The police reiterated that no further details could be gathered, as the couple tragically did not survive to recount what led to the explosion.
