Boeing workers at the U.S. West Coast factory have initiated a strike after rejecting a proposed contract, disrupting the production of the 737 MAX, Boeing’s top-selling jet.
This marks the first strike since 2008 and comes amid significant operational and financial challenges for the company. The strike follows a vote in which 94.6% of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, IAM, members, who are crucial in the production of Boeing’s jets in the Seattle and Portland areas, rejected the contract. Union members demanded a 40% pay increase over four years, but Boeing’s offer was a 25% rise, leading to the strike vote.
The strike began at midnight, halting production at Boeing’s facilities. The company, already grappling with a $60 billion debt and recent operational setbacks, faces increased pressure as it negotiates with union leaders. Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, had hoped to address worker grievances with the proposed contract, which included a $3,000 signing bonus and a commitment to build the next commercial jet in Seattle.

The strike’s impact on Boeing’s finances could be severe. With the company’s stock already down nearly 38% in 2024, a prolonged strike could further strain its recovery efforts. Analysts warn that an extended strike could cost Boeing up to $3.5 billion in cash flow and delay deliveries, impacting airlines and suppliers dependent on Boeing’s aircraft.
The situation is compounded by ongoing scrutiny from U.S. regulators following an incident where a door panel detached from a 737 MAX mid-flight in January. The strike also coincides with a period of heavy scrutiny and leadership changes at Boeing.
Boeing has expressed a willingness to return to negotiations but faces the challenge of resolving the significant gap between the union’s demands and the company’s offer. The IAM’s leadership, while advocating for workers, has yet to specify how long the strike might last or when new talks could commence.
As Boeing navigates these turbulent waters, the strike underscores the complex interplay between labor disputes and the broader challenges facing the aviation industry.
