The Nigerian Army announced a significant victory in its ongoing battle against terrorism on Friday as troops successfully eliminated the notorious terrorist leader Halilu Buzu, who hailed from Buzu in Republic of Niger and several of his fighters during a coordinated offensive on September 12, 2024.

The operation, conducted in Mayanchi village, Zamfara State, targeted a known crossing point for the terrorists. Despite intense resistance, the troops overwhelmed the attackers with superior firepower. In addition to killing Buzu and his associates, the forces seized a substantial cache of arms and ammunition, including 5 AK-47 rifles, 2 Rocket Propelled Grenade, RPG, guns, 3 PKT guns, 479 rounds of PKT ammunition, 366 rounds of 7.62mm (special) ammunition, 182 rounds of Machine Gun ammunition, 1 RPG Bomb, 29 AK-47 Magazines, 30 Motorcycles, 2 Android phones and 2 Yeekee phones.

They also recovered motorcycles, mobile phones, and destroyed the terrorists’ camp. This operation represents a major win in the Nigerian Army’s fight against terrorism in the region.

On May 16 2024, Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba declared hunting of Halilu Buzu by troops of the Nigerian Army. He settled in Subbubu Forest and lived in Shinkafi Local Council of Zamfara State.

General Buba explained that his camp and illegal gold mine were located at Kawayi in Anka local council of Zamfara State, where he had a lot of boys working for him. Halilu was said to also be a prominent cattle rustler and illegal gold miner.

Zamfara, along with other states in Nigeria’s northwest and central regions, has become a hotspot for armed gangs who carry out mass abductions and raids for ransom. These groups have escalated their attacks, with recent incidents in Katsina and Zamfara raising concerns of possible collaboration between bandits and jihadist insurgents active in the northeastern part of the country.
