On May 16 2024, Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba declared hunting of Halilu Buzu by troops of the Nigerian Army. He settled in Subbubu Forest and lived in Shinkafi Local Council of Zamfara State.
General Buba explained that his camp and illegal gold mine were located at Kawayi in Anka local council of Zamfara State, where he had a lot of boys working for him. Halilu was said to also be a prominent cattle rustler and illegal gold miner.
Zamfara, along with other states in Nigeria’s northwest and central regions, has become a hotspot for armed gangs who carry out mass abductions and raids for ransom. These groups have escalated their attacks, with recent incidents in Katsina and Zamfara raising concerns of possible collaboration between bandits and jihadist insurgents active in the northeastern part of the country.
