Members of the House of Representatives have donated N100 million to support victims of the devastating floods that have ravaged Borno State in recent weeks
The donation comes as part of a broader relief effort aimed at addressing the humanitarian crisis caused by the severe flooding that has displaced thousands of residents and destroyed homes, farmland, and infrastructure in the region.
A delegation from the legislative body, led by the Chairman of the Northern Regional Caucus, Alhassan Doguwa, visited Maiduguri on Tuesday to sympathise and commiserate with the government and people of the state over the unfortunate incident. The delegation announced the donation on behalf of the House.
The delegation met with the governor of the state, Prof Babagana Zulum, where Doguwa announced the intervention of the House on behalf of the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas.
In his address at the Government House in Maiduguri, Doguwa commended President Bola Tinubu for his prompt and effective response to the plight of the people of Borno State.
He expressed appreciation to the President for pledging the Federal Government’s support to the state government and the affected victims.

“We also pledge the National Assembly’s readiness to liaise with the Federal Government to develop a legislative framework or any possible budgetary intervention to assist state governments in addressing the impacts of flood disasters in the country,” Doguwa said.
Governor Babagana Zulum expressed his appreciation for Abbas’ gesture, highlighting it as a demonstration of the federal government’s commitment to supporting the state.
The floods, triggered by weeks of heavy rainfall, have submerged entire communities in several parts of Borno State, particularly in Maiduguri and its surrounding areas.
The disaster has impacted over 414,000 people, contaminated water sources, destroyed infrastructure, with many seeking refuge in makeshift shelters and overcrowded camps.
Farmlands and crops have been washed away, raising concerns about food shortages in the coming months.
The United Nations has launched a response to bolster government relief efforts.
Relief materials, including hot meals, water purification tablets, and emergency health services, are being distributed to affected communities.
