A devastating cholera outbreak in Ndibokote village, located in Ezza Inyimagu, Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has claimed the lives of 11 people, including a nursing mother, leaving behind her nine-month-old baby.

The outbreak, which was first reported on September 23, has left around 20 other individuals currently receiving treatment in various medical centres, Dr. Moses Ekuma, Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health disclosed. Dr. Ekuma confirmed the tragic news in a statement issued from Abakaliki on Thursday, expressing deep concern over the alarming situation.

“The situation is severe, but we are monitoring the affected individuals closely,” Dr. Ekuma said, as he called for increased vigilance and preventive measures to curb the spread of the disease.

He commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for swiftly approving funds to procure essential medical supplies to fight the outbreak, and noted that treatment centres have been set up in key locations such as Iziogo Health Centre, Sudan Mission, Onuenyim, and Ndibokote village itself.

In his appeal to the public, Dr. Ekuma urged residents to prioritize strict hygiene practices and seek immediate medical attention at the first sign of symptoms like diarrhoea and vomiting.

“Early medical intervention is crucial to saving lives. Once you notice any symptoms, please go to the nearest emergency treatment centre without delay,” he advised.

The Director, Public Health, Dr. Hyacinth Ebenyi, attributed the outbreak to open defecation, poor hygiene, and the burial of a woman suspected to have died from cholera. The affected community relies on streams for drinking water, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases.

Efforts are currently underway to mobilize resources and personnel to contain the outbreak and provide the necessary care for affected individuals. Residents have been asked to remain vigilant, report suspected cholera cases, and follow public health guidelines to prevent further loss of life.

The outbreak has left the local community in shock as health authorities race to bring the situation under control and prevent further tragedy.
