The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill to establish the South West Development Commission, SWDC, which will focus on addressing the socio-economic, ecological, and infrastructural challenges of the South-west region, comprising Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti States.
The bill was passed during Thursday’s plenary session after the Senate’s Committee on Special Duties, chaired by Kaka Shehu, presented its report.
Mr Shehu stated: “That the contemplation, as well as the drafting of the bill, aligns with the required and acceptable drafting standards.
“That the intent and purpose of the bill are well-structured and strategically streamlined for the socio-economic development of the southwest geopolitical zone of this country.
“That the establishment of the commission will bring the federal government closer to the south-west states as well as meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people.”
After a clause-by-clause consideration, the bill received widespread support from lawmakers through a voice vote. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin presided over the session, announcing its passage.
The SWDC will be responsible for receiving and managing funds allocated from the federation account, as well as donations and gifts. These funds will be used for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure, addressing environmental and ecological challenges, and promoting the overall development of the region.

Kaka Shehu highlighted that the bill is strategically aimed at enhancing the socio-economic development of the South-west, bringing the federal government closer to the people. He emphasized that the commission would address the region’s developmental needs and meet the aspirations of its citizens.
Deputy Senate President Jibrin expressed confidence that the commission would have a positive impact on the South-west, addressing social and environmental challenges and contributing to national development. He lauded President Bola Tinubu for his foresight in supporting similar initiatives and expressed hope that the president would quickly assent to the bill once it reaches his desk.
If signed into law, the SWDC will become the fifth such commission in Nigeria, joining the North East Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South East Development Commission, and Niger Delta Development Commission. Additionally, a bill to establish the North Central Development Commission is currently before the National Assembly.
