The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine reported that three of its leaders were killed in an Israeli strike on Beirut’s Kola district, on Monday, marking the first Israeli airstrike within the capital’s city limits.

Recall that the militant group Hamas, announced that its senior leader in Lebanon, Fateh Sherif Abu el-Amin, was killed alongside his family in an Israeli airstrike early Monday. The attack targeted their residence in a Palestinian refugee camp in the southern city of Tyre.

Eyewitnesses described the strike as hitting the upper floors of an apartment building in Beirut. There has been no immediate comment from the Israeli military, but the incident marks a dramatic escalation in Israel’s broader offensive against Hezbollah and its allies across the region, which has already led to casualties and displacement on a large scale.

Israel also carried out airstrikes in Yemen against the Houthi militia on Sunday, killing at least four people and wounding dozens, the Houthi-run health ministry disclosed. In Lebanon, authorities report over 1,000 fatalities and 6,000 injuries from recent Israeli strikes, which have focused on Hezbollah strongholds in the southern region and the southern suburbs of Beirut.

This surge in violence follows Israel’s stated mission to dismantle Hezbollah’s infrastructure and secure its northern regions from rocket attacks. Israeli forces have also killed key Hezbollah figures, including the group’s leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, in recent operations.

As drone activity and airstrikes intensified in Beirut on Sunday, fear continues to grow that the conflict could spiral further, pulling Iran and the United States into the fray. President Joe Biden, addressing concerns of an all-out regional war, emphasized that such an outcome must be avoided, reiterating the need for diplomacy while also authorizing U.S. military reinforcements in the region.

The fighting has led to the displacement of over a million people in Lebanon, compounding the humanitarian crisis and escalating international calls for a ceasefire. However, with hostilities showing no sign of abating, concerns of a broader conflict engulfing the Middle East continue to rise.
