As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Day, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress and human right activist, Omoyele Sowore has joined the ongoing protest in Lagos State.
Many protesters reportedly gathered on Tuesday at the Ikeja Under-bridge in Lagos to express their outrage and voice their discontent over government policies that have brought about hardship in Nigeria.
The protest is tagged ‘National Survival Day.’
The protesters are calling for the reversal of many of the economic reforms implemented by President Bola Tinubu which they say pushed many Nigerians into “multi-dimensional poverty and monumental misery.”
They are also asking the federal government to “reverse anti-people policies, neoliberal policies of privatization, deregulation and devaluation of Naira.”
The President, during a nationwide address had announced the launch the Renewed Hope Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme that is aimed at facilitating the creation of 2.5 million jobs directly and indirectly.

The initiative, which will commence in November 2024, aims to ensure the welfare and safety of workers across the country.
“In addition, later this month, we shall launch The Renewed Hope Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme.

“It is conceived as a comprehensive suite of interventions at job creation by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment that is aimed at facilitating the creation of 2.5 million jobs, directly and indirectly, on an annual incremental basis whilst simultaneously ensuring the welfare and safety of workers across the country,” he said
The president also announced the national 30-day Youths Conference to address economic hardship.
According to him, the confab will ensure that the voices of youths are heard and recommendations implemented by his administration.
He said better days are ahead for Nigeria, urging Nigerians not to lose hope in the country.
