In a significant boost to healthcare services in Yobe State, Senator Ahmad Lawan, President of the 9th Senate, has commissioned a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit, ICU, at the Yobe State Specialist Hospital in Gashua.
The new facility, built through the efforts of Senator Lawan, is only the second of its kind in Nigeria, with the first located in Ekiti State.
During the inauguration ceremony, Senator Lawan, who represents Yobe North Senatorial District, also donated a fully-equipped ambulance to the hospital, reinforcing its ability to manage critical emergencies. He emphasized that the ICU was established out of his commitment to improving healthcare in his constituency and addressing the critical need for advanced medical services.
“As a representative of the people of Yobe North Senatorial District, I have witnessed firsthand the pressing need for enhanced healthcare services in our communities.

“The absence of adequate critical care facilities has resulted in countless preventable deaths and immeasurable suffering. The realisation of this ICU today is a significant step towards addressing this challenge,” Lawan stated.
The newly commissioned ICU is equipped with cutting-edge medical technology, including advanced ventilators, patient monitoring systems, and life-saving equipment, all staffed by highly trained medical professionals. Senator Lawan highlighted the unit’s ability to cater to a wide range of critical cases, from road accident victims to patients battling severe illnesses or respiratory issues.
“This facility will bring hope to many. It is designed to offer the highest level of care to critically ill patients and will undoubtedly save lives in our region,” he said.
Senator Lawan also commended the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, for his continuous efforts in expanding healthcare infrastructure across the state, acknowledging the governor’s role in improving access to quality medical services for the people of Yobe.
