The International Organization for Migration, IOM, has released over $1.8 million to provide emergency humanitarian aid to more than 180,000 flood-affected individuals in Nigeria’s Borno, Benue, Adamawa, and Yobe States.

This funding aims to address the immediate needs of communities devastated by unprecedented flooding across the country.

IOM Nigeria’s Chief of Mission ad interim, Paola Pace, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The dramatic flooding we are witnessing this year has devastated countless communities, displacing families and disrupting lives. Our priority is to ensure immediate relief and support to those affected, providing them access to essential services and resources to rebuild their lives.”

The funds, distributed through the Rapid Response Fund, RRF, will be used to deliver critical assistance such as shelter, non-food items, cash support, and vital protection and hygiene services. This response will help alleviate suffering and support the swift recovery of those displaced by the floods, with a focus on gender-based violence prevention and community-based protection services, especially for children and women.

Flooding this year has impacted over 1.2 million people across Nigeria, with Borno State, already grappling with a prolonged humanitarian crisis, hit hardest. The floods have resulted in the tragic loss of more than 300 lives and forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes in search of safety.

The initial $1.8 million in funding, allocated in August 2024, was distributed to various local and international NGOs, including Salient Humanitarian Organization, Solidarités International, and Wadata Relief Care Initiative, among others, to ensure life-saving assistance is rapidly provided to affected communities. The RRF, as a small grant mechanism, allows for swift, targeted interventions in the wake of natural and man-made disasters across Nigeria.

The IOM is a United Nations related organization working in the field of migration. The organization implements operational assistance programmes for migrants, including internally displaced persons, refugees, and migrant workers.

The International Organization for Migration is based in Geneva. Its director general is Amy Pope.
