The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill to establish a Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, Kaduna State and a Federal University of Technology in Ilaro, Ogun State.
The approval followed the adoption of a report by the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND during Tuesday’s plenary session. The report, presented by Senator Mohammed Muntari (APC-Katsina), highlighted the unanimous support from stakeholders at the public hearing.
Muntari emphasized that the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia would equip students with practical and theoretical knowledge in technology, applied science, commerce, and management. The institution aims to address environmental hazards, improve productivity, and tackle security challenges by producing graduates with the skills necessary to contribute to national development.
“The establishment of this university will play a vital role in reducing risks, improving data management, and addressing economic and security issues affecting the country,” Muntari said.

The Federal University of Applied Sciences is expected to: Enhance educational opportunities, by providing full-time courses in technology and applied science management. Address national issues, by contributing to tackle security, economic growth, and youth integration through skill development. Support regional development, by fostering economic growth in Kaduna South by preparing graduates for various sectors including commerce and management.
Senator Muntari also pointed out that the university would play a crucial role in reducing crime rates by equipping young people with valuable skills that can lead to employment and self-sufficiency
The Senate also passed a bill to create the Federal University of Technology in Ilaro, Ogun State. Both bills are expected to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s educational landscape, boosting technological innovation and food production.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the lawmakers for their efforts and expressed optimism that, if signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, these institutions would strengthen Nigeria’s knowledge base and accelerate progress in critical sectors.
The establishment of the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia and the Federal University of Technology in Ilaro, represents a significant investment in Nigeria’s educational future, aiming to produce skilled graduates who can meet the demands of an evolving economy.
