The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has refuted claims that it obstructed political parties from inspecting election materials and BVAS machines used in the Edo State governorship election.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr. Anugbum Onuoha described the allegations as unfounded and misleading.

The accusations arose after the People’s Democratic Party and its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, alleged that INEC failed to comply with a court order permitting inspection of the election materials. In response, Onuoha clarified that INEC had scheduled the inspection of these materials for the same day at its headquarters in Benin.

“The claims that I have denied political parties access to inspect the BVAS devices and other election materials are completely false,” Onuoha stated. He emphasized that INEC is committed to maintaining transparency and integrity throughout the electoral process.

Onuoha reiterated that all political parties involved in election petitions have the right to inspect the materials used in the elections, a process mandated by law. He assured that no barriers would be placed in the way of political parties wishing to conduct inspections, as long as they adhere to the required legal procedures.

“The inspection of election materials, including the BVAS devices, is formally scheduled for today at the INEC Headquarters in Benin. All political parties and their representatives are welcome to participate to ensure adherence to the rule of law,” he added.

He expressed disappointment over the spread of such unverified allegations and urged the public to disregard misinformation. Onuoha reaffirmed INEC’s dedication to transparency, fairness, and accountability in the electoral process, stating that the Commission’s loyalty lies with the Nigerian people and the Constitution.

Moreover, he encouraged political parties to engage with his office through appropriate legal channels for any inquiries regarding the inspection of materials.

As tensions continue to rise in Edo State over these allegations, both INEC and political parties remain under scrutiny from the public and media alike. The outcome of this inspection could significantly influence the ongoing legal battles surrounding the election results.
