Political scientist and diplomat, Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari will next month deliver the 12th anniversary lecture of Realnews Magazine and Publications Limited in Lagos.
The theme for this year’s lecture is “Africa in World Shifting Geopolitics: Matters Arising on Democracy, Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Natural Resources”, the publisher of Realnews Magazine, Maureen Chigho has disclosed.
Ambassador Gambari, a seasoned diplomat and academic, brings a wealth of experience to the discussion on Africa’s role in the evolving global landscape. His acceptance to deliver the lecture was confirmed in an email dated April 27, 2024.
Ambassador Gambari, who served as Nigeria’s Chief of Staff from 2020 to 2023, has an extensive diplomatic career. He was Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1990 to 1999, under five different Heads of State, and served as Nigeria’s Minister for External Affairs from 1984 to 1985. His roles at the UN included serving as President of UNICEF in 1999 and as Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs from 2005 to 2007.
Born in 1944 in Ilorin, Kwara State, Ambassador Gambari has an illustrious academic background, having attended King’s College, Lagos, before earning a B.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science and International Relations from Columbia University, New York. He has held teaching and research positions at institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, and Ahmadu Bello University, among others.

This year’s lecture will be chaired by Ms. Beatrice Eyong, the UN Women’s Country Representative in Nigeria, who will also moderate the panel discussion.
