Worried by the growing leadership crisis at the Lagos Country Club, interim managers of the facility have temporarily shut down the club, citing safety concerns.

This announcement was made in a public notice jointly signed by Chief Muniru Moradeyo and Sunny Ukhuelegbe, the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, respectively.

Dated October 12, 2024, and shared with CREDIBLE NEWS, the notice indicated that the committee had been alerted to an unlawful emergency general meeting, EMG, purportedly scheduled by some dissatisfied members last Thursday.

The notice emphasized that this meeting took place despite the Caretaker Committee’s prohibition and the existence of two ongoing court cases that sought to prevent the EGM from occurring until the cases were resolved.

“The EGM resolution aims to overthrow the current Caretaker Committee and replace it with another committee, which contradicts the Consent Judgment under which the existing Caretaker Committee was established, without a Court Order and in violation of the Consent Judgment and pending cases.

“This constitutes an attempted coup d’état and severe lawlessness, which we, as law-abiding individuals, will not permit.

“Given the threats of violence posed by certain members of this group, and to protect Club members and their families from potential harm and property damage, we have made the difficult decision to close the Club immediately, effective Saturday, October 12, 2024, until further notice. We advise everyone to refrain from visiting the Club for the time being.

“We will keep you informed of any developments and will reopen the Club as soon as it is safe to do so,” the notice concluded.

The Club was founded in 1949 by British expatriates and Nigerian elites and was initially locate on a 12-acre property high-brow Ikoyi.

Its first Chairman was Sir John Macpherson, British Governor-General of Nigeria and members were engaged in social gatherings, sports (golf, tennis, cricket), and other recreational events.

Thr Club was relocated to Ikeja in 1960, on a 200-acre property even as membership expanded to include Nigerians and international professionals.

Subsequently new sports facilities as swimming pool, squash courts were introduced as the Club hosted concerts, fashion shows and charity events.
