As the cost of living soars, the Lagos State Government has announced N85,000 as the new minimum wage.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu broke the cherry news Wednesday night during a live interview on Channels TV, topping up the N70,000 minimum wage set by the Federal Government.
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that this new wage structure is the result of extensive discussions with labor unions in Lagos. He emphasized that the increase is not meant to spark competition among states but is instead based on Lagos State’s financial capacity and ability to meet the needs of its workforce.
“I am glad to let you know that the minimum wage for Lagos, which we have conversed and discussed with our Union, is N85,000 today,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“It is not a competition; it is a function of affordability and capacity,” said the governor.
This new wage increase is expected to provide much-needed relief to civil servants, especially in light of the current economic situation in the country.
With Lagos being one of Nigeria’s most populous and economically vibrant states, this move sets a new benchmark for other states in terms of worker welfare.
