Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a resident medical doctor at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna State, has been freed after enduring a harrowing 10-month kidnapping ordeal.

Abducted by bandits in December 2023, Dr. Popoola was taken alongside her husband, Nurudeen Popoola, a military officer, and her nephew, Folaranmi Abdul-Mugni.

Initially, the kidnappers demanded a staggering N40 million ransom. After negotiations, they released her husband on March 8, 2024, but kept Dr. Popoola and her nephew captive. Their release on Wednesday evening marks a significant relief for the family and the medical community.

Dr. Tope Osundara, President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, expressed heartfelt joy over her release and extended gratitude to all who played a role in ensuring their safe return. This incident underscores the alarming trend of kidnappings and ransom demands plaguing Nigeria, raising urgent calls for enhanced security measures.

Credible News recalls that NARD, announced a seven-day warning strike starting on Monday, August 26, 2024. This decision was in response to the abduction of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat, who was kidnapped by bandits.

NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, disclosed the decision following an Emergency National Executive Council meeting. He emphasized that the strike was a total and complete action intended to draw attention to Dr. Popoola’s prolonged captivity. The strike lasted for seven days and was aimed to pressure authorities into resolving the situation. “During the strike, there will be no concessions, and there will be no emergency care,” he added.
