Manchester United has reached an agreement with Sporting Lisbon to appoint 39-year-old Ruben Amorim as their new head coach, starting after the November international break.
This decision follows the recent dismissal of Erik ten Hag, who managed the club for two and a half years.
The agreement was confirmed by The Athletic, which reported that United’s leadership team, including CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth, traveled to Lisbon to finalize the deal. Amorim’s departure from Sporting comes with conditions: he will oversee three important matches, including a pivotal game against Manchester City, before officially taking charge at Old Trafford.
To facilitate a swift transition, United has agreed to pay an extra €1 million to shorten Amorim’s notice period, in addition to Sporting’s request for around €5 million to permit several of Amorim’s essential staff members to accompany him to the Premier League.

The Portuguese manager has forged a strong connection with Sporting’s fans during his tenure, leading the team to two league titles—their first in almost 20 years. He aims for a smooth transition, respecting his time at the club.
Amorim is expected to remain with Sporting for three crucial matches, including the match against Manchester City, before officially taking the reins at United with his first game being away against Ipswich Town on 24 November.
In the interim, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has stepped in as the interim manager, leading the team to a recent victory over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup. Van Nistelrooy will manage the team through upcoming Premier League and Europa League fixtures until Amorim’s arrival.
Known for his tactical flexibility and a distinctive 3-4-3 formation that prioritizes possession and solid defense, Amorim has successfully blended offensive and defensive strategies, recently leading Sporting to the top of the Primeira Liga.
His commitment to youth development is another appealing aspect for United, as he has successfully integrated young talents like Goncalo Inacio and Matheus Nunes into the first team, enhancing player performance. Notably, he has played a significant role in the development of players such as Pedro Porro and Manuel Ugarte, who have since moved to prominent European clubs.
Amorim’s tenure will officially commence with a home match against Everton in December, after the away game against Ipswich Town.
