Kwara State has lost a political titan with the demise of Christopher Tunji-Ayeni in a road crash.
The former Deputy Speaker of the Kwara House of Assembly died from injuries sustained after his vehicle collided Thursday with a truck on the Ajase- Ipo road, in Kwara State.
Mrs Olayinka Basambo, Public Relations Officer of Kwara Command of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, verified the death in a press statement on Thursday in Ilorin.
She disclosed that the FRSC received a call from good Samaritans regarding the accident at approximately 10:10 a.m. on Thursday.
Basambo stated that some FRSC officers arrived at the accident scene about 15 minutes later in Ajase-Ipo, located in the Irepodun Local Government Area of the state.
“This location is roughly 500 meters from Igbaja Junction on the Ajase-Ilorin highway.
“Two vehicles were involved in the incident. One was a Toyota Hilux with registration number ARP 545 KY, and the other was a commercial truck with registration number T-17488LA,” she explained.
The PRO reported that five individuals were involved in the crash, consisting of three males and two females who sustained injuries.
“The victims were promptly taken to the nearest hospital in Ajase Ipo, where one person later succumbed to his injuries during treatment,” she added.
Basambo indicated that an investigation revealed the accident was caused by excessive speeding.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ayeni was a notable political figure in the state and the 2023 House of Representatives candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party PDP.
He had recently switched allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress APC,indicating a significant turn in his political career.
The former Deputy Speaker was also the Akogun of Isapa land in Ekiti Local Government Area of the state, a title which underscored his influence and status within the community. NAN.
