Industry Minister, François-Philippe Champagne made the announcement on Wednesday, stating that the decision stemmed from security concerns surrounding TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance Ltd., and its creation of TikTok Technology Canada Inc. The review was conducted with input from Canada’s intelligence and security agencies.
Though TikTok will cease its business activities in Canada, users can still enjoy the app, create new accounts, and engage with content. The government has encouraged Canadians to remain vigilant about cybersecurity risks associated with social media platforms.
A TikTok spokesperson confirmed that the dissolution would result in job losses and expressed the company’s intent to challenge the order in court. They assured users that the platform would remain available to creators and businesses.
The Canadian move adds to ongoing tensions over TikTok’s security concerns globally. In the United States, a bill passed in March 2024 calls for a ban on TikTok unless ByteDance divests its stake, with the ban scheduled for January 2025, pending further political developments. Additionally, TikTok has faced restrictions on government devices in both countries.
