In a tragic accident early Monday, a Dangote Cement truck reportedly suffered brake failure and smashed through Alapere Market in Epe, leaving a scene of heartbreak and devastation.

Witnesses say the truck lost control, descending into the bustling market, where it struck unsuspecting shoppers, residents, and children heading to school.

Eyewitness accounts describe the horrific moments as the massive vehicle plowed through the busy area, unable to stop. Video footage circulating online shows the aftermath, as emergency responders, onlookers, and road safety officials worked  to rescue injured victims and recover bodies from the rubble.

At the time of reporting, emergency personnel were still at the scene, attending to victims and transporting them to local hospitals. While the total number of casualties is yet to be confirmed, initial reports indicate a significant loss of life. Grieving family members, stunned market-goers, and community members have gathered, mourning those lost in this tragic event.

Though official statements from road safety authorities are pending, initial investigations suggest that brake failure was likely the cause. This devastating accident has left the community of Epe in mourning, with many expressing shock and grief over the sudden loss of lives.

In response to the incident,  Lagos State Traffic Management Authority implemented temporary traffic diversions to alleviate congestion and ensure safe passage for other vehicles. Commuters were advised to avoid the Ita-Opo to Ayetoro route and instead follow alternative paths through Shade or via the roundabout near Epe General Hospital.

Authorities emphasized the importance of adhering to these detours to prevent further disruptions as they managed the aftermath of this tragic event.

This incident has reignited concerns regarding road safety and vehicle maintenance practices within Nigeria, particularly involving heavy-duty trucks. Dangote trucks have been involved in numerous accidents over the years, raising questions about driver training and vehicle upkeep.

Many reports have highlighted a troubling pattern of accidents linked to Dangote vehicles, with calls for stricter regulations and oversight in the transportation sector.

As investigations into this latest accident continue, families of the victims are mourning their loss, while community members express their fears about safety on Lagos roads.

The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by heavy vehicles in urban areas and underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures to protect lives.
