World leaders gathered in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Tuesday (today) for the 29th UN Climate Change Conference, COP29, where discussions are set to intensify over the next two weeks.
The conference aims to address the escalating climate crisis and establish new financial commitments to support countries most affected by climate change. The global summit, which began on Monday, is being attended by representatives from nearly 200 nations, including key speakers like UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
However, the conference has seen notable absences, with leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Brazilian President Lula da Silva missing from the event. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also canceled his trip following a political crisis at home.

A key focus of COP29 is climate finance, particularly the renewal of the $100 billion pledge made in 2009, which is set to expire this year. UN climate chief Simon Stiell emphasized that climate finance should not be viewed as charity but as an essential part of global stability. “Runaway climate change is impacting every single individual in the world,” Stiell said, highlighting the devastating effects of climate shocks such as wildfires, heatwaves, and floods.
Stiell, who hails from Grenada—a country severely impacted by climate events—called for a more ambitious global climate finance goal, warning that without stronger financial commitments, countries, especially those vulnerable to climate disasters, could face devastating consequences. He stressed the urgent need for a robust global financial system capable of supporting climate adaptation and mitigation efforts worldwide.
COP29 runs through November 22, and negotiators are under pressure to deliver significant outcomes. Stiell challenged delegates to show leadership and to secure a deal that reflects the urgency of the climate crisis. “We cannot leave Baku without a substantial outcome,” he declared, urging countries to unite in finding solutions to the climate challenges ahead.
