The Anambra State Government has opened investigation into the alleged assault on Okey Akaneme, former President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture, by officials of the Anambra State Waste Management Agency, ASWAMA, and police officers.
The incident, which left Akaneme with severe spinal injuries, has drawn significant public attention and condemnation on social media.
The Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odumegwu, confirmed the probe on Monday, stating, “Anambra State does not condone assault or touting of any kind. If any government agent is found culpable, he will face the consequences.” Odumegwu emphasized that the government’s priority is Akaneme’s health, saying: “First and foremost, we must know the medical condition of the victim.”

Akaneme was allegedly attacked on October 11 at his home in Onitsha after ASWAMA officials, accompanied by two policemen, demanded his arrest over unpaid sanitation fees. Witnesses claim he was severely injured in the confrontation, with a close associate stating: “The team entered Akaneme’s home early, forced their way in, and inflicted an almost fatal injury, leaving him unable to move.”
Following the attack, Akaneme was transferred to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, where doctors confirmed 65% spinal cord damage. The incident has sparked outrage, with human rights groups and residents demanding accountability and questioning the government’s initial silence.
Odumegwu noted that ASWAMA officials have tried unsuccessfully to reach Akaneme to ascertain his condition. Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command has referred the case to the State CID in Awka for further investigation, though spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga has not commented.
As the probe continues, public calls for accountability grow louder, pressuring state authorities to ensure justice for Akaneme.
