The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, has filed a lawsuit against former Senator Andy Uba, alongside Crystal Uba and Benjamin Etu, for alleged N400 million fraud.

The charges, filed before Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, accuse the defendants of conspiring to defraud a complainant, George Uboh, under false pretenses of securing an appointment as the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

According to court documents, the accused made false claims of having perfected arrangements for the said appointment in exchange for the sum of N400 million. The charges are in violation of Section 8 and Section 1 (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.

The complainant, George Uboh, alleged that the defendants converted the funds for personal use. Uboh supported his claims with documentary evidence and voice recordings, which he described as “overwhelming and irrefutable.”

The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/538/2024, was initially stalled due to the defendants evading court summons and securing a fundamental rights enforcement order that prevented the police from pursuing the case.

Following the lifting of the order, the defendants have now been charged. However, their arraignment has been adjourned to February 18, 2025, to ensure their appearance in court.

The prosecution lawyer, M.L. Anthony, informed the court that the defendants had been evading service of court documents despite being granted administrative bail.

If found guilty, the defendants face penalties under the Advance Fee Fraud Act, including significant jail terms. Six witnesses are expected to testify in the trial.

Justice Ekwo emphasized that the matter will proceed as scheduled to allow the defendants to take their plea.
