The Federal Government has sacked Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bernard Odoh and dissolved the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, citing “grave breaches of laws” governing the institution.
This was announced on Wednesday by Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, through a statement by Mrs. Folashade Boriowo, the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations.
The Council’s dissolution was prompted by its disregard for lawful directives including the unilateral appointment of a Vice-Chancellor who failed to meet the minimum eligibility criteria. Dr. Alausa explained that this action led to a breakdown of law and order, creating tension and disharmony within the university.

Mrs. Rosemary Ifoema Nwokike, the registrar was also removed from office. Dr. Alausa stated that an Acting Vice-Chancellor would be appointed, and a new Governing Council would be constituted promptly to restore governance and lawfulness to the university.
In addition, Dr. Alausa announced the reassignment of Pro-Chancellors and Chairmen of the Governing Councils of the Federal Universities in Oye-Ekiti and Lokoja. Following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval, Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba will now serve at Federal University, Oye-Ekiti while Engr. Kayode Ojo takes on the role at Federal University, Lokoja.
The change aligns with the Federal Ministry of Education’s policy of ensuring Pro-Chancellors are appointed from outside the university’s host state to promote national cohesion and impartial oversight.
Dr. Alausa emphasized that these measures reflect the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring good governance, accountability and adherence to the rule of law in Nigeria’s educational institutions. The changes, effective immediately, are expected to bolster the leadership and development of federal universities across the nation.
