Liverpool moved eight points clear at the top of the Premier League as Mohamed Salah scored two late goals to down Southampton.
After Manchester City lost 4-0 at home to Tottenham on Saturday, Arne Slot’s side strengthened their title claims at St Mary’s.
The Reds have enjoyed a brilliant start to the season under Slot and took full advantage of the latest slip-up by City. Victory against bottom side Southampton on the south coast leaves Liverpool in a commanding position and makes them strong favourites to win the title.
Liverpool were trailing against Southampton in the second half but their talisman Salah equalised with a neat finish and then equalised from the penalty spot on what felt like a significant day in the title race. Liverpool are nine points ahead of Arsenal in fourth.
Arsenal are now six points behind Liverpool after beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Bukayo Saka, Thomas Partey and Ethan Nwaneri provided the goals to stop the rot for the Gunners, following a four-match winless run in the top flight.
