Tragedy struck on Monday night when a boat capsized along the Bennett Island River in the Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The incident left five people dead, while six others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, a total of 19 people were rescued from the scene, but one person remains missing.

The police have confirmed the details of the accident, with efforts still underway to locate the missing individual.  Reports indicate that the boats capsized after striking a submerged log, which contributed to the disaster. Many passengers were reportedly not wearing life jackets at the time of the accident.

The tragic event has raised concerns about safety measures on the river, as authorities continue their investigations into the cause of the capsizing.

These boat accidents and many more, have reignited concerns about water transport safety in Nigeria, as calls grow for the enforcement of stricter maritime laws to prevent future tragedies. Authorities are also appealing to the public for any information that could assist in the rescue efforts and ongoing investigations.

Authorities may need to reassess safety protocols and implement stricter regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Public awareness campaigns emphasizing the importance of life jackets and safe boating practices could also play a crucial role in enhancing passenger safety.
