I woke up today to numerous questions about SARS-CoV-2 XEC, and I understand the growing curiosity. Here’s what you need to know:

SARS-CoV-2 XEC is a recombinant subvariant currently under close monitoring by the Africa CDC and WHO.

Early findings suggest it has increased transmissibility and unique mutations that may allow for higher immune evasion compared to its parent lineages.

However, the symptoms are similar to those of Omicron subvariants, and importantly, there is no evidence to suggest increased disease severity caused by the XEC variant.

Countries, including Nigeria, are being encouraged to enhance Influenza-like Illness and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome  surveillance to keep track of SARS-CoV-2 cases and monitor new variants.

Why does this matter?
Public health experts have been emphasizing the importance of staying vigilant as new variants continue to emerge. Questions about XEC reflect people’s growing awareness of the role variants play in the pandemic’s trajectory, and this is a good sign. It means individuals are eager to stay informed and proactive.

What can Nigerians do?
• Follow basic preventive measures like regular handwashing, maintaining social distancing, and keeping your environment clean.
• Monitor international travelers and those entering the country.
• Stay informed from trusted sources to avoid panic or misinformation.

For healthcare providers:
• Adhere strictly to Infection Prevention and Control measures.
• Use gloves and other protective equipment appropriately, ensuring they’re not reused between patients.

As questions continue to pour in, remember that the best defense against uncertainty is reliable information and proactive action. Prevention is, and always will be, better than cure.
