For decades, Christmas in Nigeria was a time of unparalleled excitement. It was more than just a holiday, it was a cultural celebration that spanned generations.

People traveled from all parts of the country to gather with families, decorate homes with dazzling lights, and prepare feasts that would last for days. The streets were filled with vendors selling Christmas decorations, music blared from loudspeakers, and the air smelled of roasted meats, jollof rice, and fried plantains. Christmas meant new clothes, new shoes, and the joy of sharing gifts with loved ones.

But in the last decade, the energy around Christmas has dwindled. For many Nigerians, this once joyous season now feels more like a reminder of what has been lost — a reflection of the challenges of a country grappling with economic hardship, rising inflation, and a lack of opportunities.

As stated by National Bureau of Statistics, inflation has steadily risen in recent years, making it harder for families to meet basic needs. In 2023, inflation hit a 17-year high, pushing the cost of food, fuel, and other essentials to levels that many simply cannot afford

With rising inflation, high cost of living, and a general decline in disposable income, many families can no longer afford the lavish meals, new clothes, and festive gatherings that defined the holiday in the past.

Tunde, a father of three said that  “Christmas used to be a time to go all out  new clothes, special meals. Now, we can barely afford the basics.”

Similarly, Nkechi, a single mother from Lagos says, “Even the Christmas rice is too expensive this year. It’s painful to see how things have changed.”

The economic downturn hasn’t just affected families, local businesses, especially those that relied on the Christmas season for a significant portion of their income, have also been hit hard.

Many small businesses which once thrived during the holiday rush now report lower sales. Gift shops, clothing stores, and restaurants have seen a decline in demand, as Nigerians are increasingly cautious with their spending. A tailor comments, “Before, Christmas was our busiest time. People would come to buy clothes, but now they’re asking for cheaper options or not buying at all.”

The festive energy that used to fill the streets of Nigerian cities has dimmed, with fewer street parties and family reunions. Instead, families are opting for smaller, more intimate gatherings, often foregoing the traditional lavish meals and new outfits.

Despite these challenges, the core of Christmas family, love, and hope  remains resilient. In the face of adversity, Christmas in Nigeria has become less about spending and more about connection and resilience.

While the festive season may no longer carry the same material significance, the spirit of giving, togetherness, and hope remains as strong as ever.
