The Kano State Government is strongly opposed to the tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly, arguing that the proposed measures would harm the welfare of Nigerians, especially those in the northern region.

Governor Abba Yusuf, represented by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, expressed the state’s stance during the 2025 New Year celebration at the Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa open theatre.

This position was officially confirmed in a press statement issued by the Deputy Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Garba Shu’aibu.

Governor Yusuf criticized the tax reform bill, asserting, “This tax reform bill is not the solution to our economic challenges. Kano State stands firmly against any policy that negatively impacts the welfare of our people.”

He also denounced the proposed tax hikes as “ill-timed, lopsided, and harmful to the unity of the country,” noting that Nigerians, particularly those in the north, are already struggling with hyperinflation and widespread insecurity.

He urged the federal government to prioritize addressing extreme poverty and hunger, especially in the northern regions, rather than advancing policies that could further exacerbate these issues.

Governor Yusuf took the opportunity to highlight the achievements of his administration, particularly in the areas of healthcare, education, road construction, and foreign scholarship programs.

He also reminded residents of the Supreme Court’s January 2024 ruling affirming his election as the legitimate governor of Kano State.

In addition, Deputy Governor Gwarzo marked the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2024 as a significant victory for the will of the people.

He emphasized that the appointment of an Emir is the sole prerogative of the governor, urging those involved in the affairs of the Kano Emirate to respect the law and foster peace.

In closing, Gwarzo urged the people of Kano to remain united and focused on progress, stating, “Let 2025 be a year of shared prosperity and growth. Together, we will build a stronger Kano.”
