A groundbreaking discovery of a clean energy source capable of powering humanity indefinitely is remarkable, but it comes with a challenge.

Given that Earth’s geothermal vents are located deep beneath the oceans, extracting the energy would involve logistical complexities, making it a process that could take thousands or even millions of years before it is effectively utilized.

Yet, if the technical hurdles can be overcome, humanity could tap into a limitless supply of clean energy.

What exactly is geothermal energy?

Rifts in the Earth’s crust, situated at the ocean’s depths, continuously release heat due to seismic activity.

This constant energy flow from the rift valleys beneath the sea holds the potential to fuel human progress for eternity, bringing numerous benefits to both humanity and our planet.

As long as humanity can find an efficient method of extracting geothermal energy, it stands as the most reliable energy source.

The heat emitted from the Earth remains steady, whereas other renewable energy sources like solar and wind are dependent on weather conditions, causing them to be less predictable.

Harnessing power from the Earth’s surface presents the unique chance to move away from fossil fuels, while maintaining the reliable consistency that makes them the primary source of energy for humanity.

The advantages and challenges of accessing the greatest resource in human history

The primary obstacle preventing us from exploiting humanity’s most valuable resource is the significant challenge of overcoming the technical hurdles involved.

To access this subsea treasure, substantial technological advancements would be necessary from scientists and engineers to meet the demands of this colossal task.

First, specialists would need to pinpoint the best geothermal vent locations around the globe, mark them, and devise a way to transport their energy to mainland countries.

Next, engineers, scientists, and submarine experts would need to collaborate on a project potentially worth billions of dollars to develop machines capable of extracting energy efficiently, transporting it across vast distances, and installing it deep under the sea.

Such a large-scale operation, requiring advanced technology, would be highly uncertain and incredibly expensive.

Additionally, many of these underwater vents lie in international waters, raising potential complications over ownership and energy distribution between competing nations.

Nonetheless, some countries have been working together through the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea to establish agreements for when the time comes to harness Earth’s subterranean energy.
