UN Secretary-General António Guterres has conveyed his sorrow over the rapidly spreading wildfires that have caused severe destruction in the Los Angeles area, resulting in fatalities and displacing thousands of residents.

These fires, which have been called some of the worst in the city’s history, have consumed vast areas of land, destroyed homes, and left firefighters struggling to control multiple outbreaks under unprecedented circumstances.

“The Secretary-General is shocked and saddened by the widespread devastation caused by the fast-moving wildfires,” his Spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, stated in a press release on Thursday.

Guterres expressed his deepest sympathy to the families of the victims and showed support for those displaced, many of whom have lost their homes in the disaster.

The fires have resulted in at least five deaths, forced over 100,000 people to flee, and destroyed hundreds of buildings. U.S. private forecaster AccuWeather estimates that damages could surpass $50 billion.

The Secretary-General praised the bravery and commitment of first responders working in “extremely difficult conditions” to save lives and control the fires.

At least 7,500 firefighters are engaged in battling the flames, with officials describing the situation as both historic and hazardous.

Local fire chiefs have reported that dry vegetation, coupled with hurricane-force winds, has intensified the fires, with four out of six major blazes remaining completely uncontrolled.

Efforts to contain the fires are further hindered by a shortage of resources and the challenging terrain.

Rainfall levels have been below average since late 2024, leading to dry conditions that, in combination with the Santana Winds, have worsened the fire risk, experts note.

The Santana Winds, a familiar weather pattern in the area, exacerbate fire danger by raising temperatures, significantly lowering humidity, and rapidly drying out vegetation, creating ideal conditions for the fires to spread.

The World Health Organisation, WHO, has emphasized the need for preventive measures to reduce the impact of wildfires, such as regular forest underbrush clearing, ensuring adequate water supplies for firefighters, and testing firefighting capabilities.

Evacuation planning remains a critical concern, with experts stressing the importance of preventing blocked evacuation routes.

“Wildfires move rapidly, and any evacuation system needs to account for all people, especially those who are elderly and unable to move quickly,” said James Douris of the World Meteorological Organisation ,WMO, a specialist in early warning systems.

In addition to the immediate destruction, wildfires pose significant public health threats.

WHO spokesperson Dr. Margaret Harris warned that wildfire smoke, which is a toxic mixture of pollutants, can lead to premature deaths and long-term damage to the lungs, heart, and brain.

Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses, are at greater risk.
