General Jeremiah Useni (Rtd), the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a former senator has passed on aged 82.

His death after a prolonged illness was announced by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang in a statement issued on Thursday in Jos.

Governor Mutfwang expressed deep sorrow over his passing, describing it as a significant loss for Plateau State.

In his message, Mutfwang offered condolences to Useni’s immediate family, the people of Plateau, the Tarok nation, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the wider nation, urging them to take solace in God during this difficult time.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to the President, the Armed Forces, and the Tarok nation over the loss of this distinguished elder statesman,” Mutfwang said.

He further urged Useni’s family and the people of Plateau to find comfort and strength in God during this trying period.

Useni’s career spanned several influential roles both in the military and in politics.

He served as the Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and held numerous other appointments during his distinguished military career.

After retiring from the military, Useni ventured into politics, where he became Deputy Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party.

He later represented Plateau South Senatorial District in the National Assembly from 2015 to 2019.

Useni also ran as the governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 Plateau State elections.

The death of General Useni marks the end of an era for many in Plateau and beyond, as he was widely recognized for his contributions to the military, politics, and the development of his community.

His legacy will be remembered by those who knew him, and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the people of Plateau State.
