The Federal Government has allocated N940.5 billion to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, for 2025 to boost infrastructure and manpower development in higher institutions.
President Bola Tinubu made this disclosure amidst receny agitations on the mandate of the agency and scope of operations by the Federal Government.
The President, at the 42nd Founders’ Day and 33rd Convocation of the Federal University of Technology, Minna FUTMinna where he was represented by Rakiya Iliyasu, Director of Tertiary Education, said the allocation reflects his administration’s commitment to improving education.
Tinubu alsonoted that over N104 billion in student loans has been disbursed to more than 600,000 students through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND.
He urged universities to work closely with industries to align research with national development needs.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Faruk Adamu-Kuta described the event as historic, highlighting that FUTMinna ranks 8th among Nigeria’s universities and 2nd among specialized institutions.
Niger State Governor Umaru Bago awarded an honorary Doctorate in Agriculture, pledged more support for education and research. He donated N100 million to the university’s endowment fund, while Sen. Muhammad Sani-Musa contributed N200 million.
A total of 5,816 students graduated, including 4,955 undergraduates, 632 Master’s degree holders, 105 postgraduate diploma recipients, and 124 PhD holders.
The ceremony marked another step forward in FUTMinna’s role as a leading institution in technological education.
The President’s message comes on the heels of agitation by the Academic Staff Union of Universities on the plan by government to diminish the scope and operations of the Fund.
