The Kogi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, KSPHCDA, has made significant strides in the fight against cervical cancer, successfully vaccinating 284,750 eligible females against the Human Papilloma Virus, HPV.
Dr. Musa Mu’azu, Executive Director of KSPHCDA, highlighted this achievement at the 2nd Busayo Emmanuel Agbana Annual Memorial Lecture, organised by the College of Health Sciences, Prince Abubakar Audu University, PAAU, Anyigba, Kogi.
Mu’azu stated that since launching the HPV vaccination exercise on May 27, 2024, the state has achieved 99% coverage of its target population. He attributed the success to well-structured pre-implementation strategies, effective execution, and post-vaccination follow-ups.
He noted that extensive advocacy, communication, and social mobilisation played key roles in ensuring widespread acceptance of the vaccine. Additionally, health workers and stakeholders received training on vaccine safety, handling, and management to enhance the programme’s effectiveness.
“Our plan is to integrate HPV vaccination into routine immunisation, intensify public awareness, and strengthen collaboration with media outlets to sustain this momentum,” Mu’azu said. He also appreciated the support of development partners such as WHO and UNICEF.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Simon Akogu, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, called for increased cervical cancer screenings and training for healthcare professionals. He stressed the need for more awareness campaigns to ensure early detection and treatment.
Prof. Marietu Tenuche, Vice Chancellor of PAAU, commended the partnership between the Ministry of Health and KSPHCDA, noting that community involvement and health education are crucial in disease prevention and promoting overall well-being.
