The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, has urged Muslims nationwide to search for the 1446 AH Ramadan crescent on Friday.
President-General of NSCIA and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, made the call in a statement signed by NSCIA Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, on Thursday.
Based on recommendations from the National Moon Sighting Committee, NMSC , the Sultan instructed Muslims to look for the moon immediately after sunset on February 28, 2025, equivalent to 29th Sha’aban 1446 AH.
“If the crescent is sighted by credible witnesses, then Ramadan will begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025. Otherwise, Sunday, March 2, 2025, automatically becomes the first day of Ramadan,” he stated.
The council prayed for Muslims to witness and benefit from the sacred month, encouraging reports of moon sightings through traditional Islamic leaders and designated NMSC members.
As the fasting period approaches, the council called on wealthy Muslims to support the less privileged before, during, and after Ramadan. Traders were also urged to refrain from hoarding food items or inflating prices, ensuring affordability for all.
Wishing Muslims across the country and beyond a blessed Ramadan in advance, the council emphasized the spiritual and communal significance of the holy month.
