Fuel tanker explosion kills many in Ilorin

Fire spreads as emergency responders delay

A deadly fuel tanker explosion has claimed multiple lives in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, after a raging fire erupted along the Okolowo expressway on Friday morning, engulfing several vehicles and trapping passengers.

A live video from the scene showed thick flames consuming cars while onlookers watched helplessly. A witness described the horror, stating that people were burning inside their vehicles while other fuel-laden tankers continued to drive past the fire, heightening fears of further explosions.

As of the time of filing this report, emergency responders had yet to arrive, leaving the inferno to spread unchecked. The delay in response worsened the situation, posing a severe risk to more lives and properties in the area.

This tragic incident follows a series of similar disasters in recent months. In January, a fuel tanker explosion near Suleja, Niger State, killed at least 98 people after individuals attempted to siphon fuel from a crashed tanker using a generator, triggering a massive blast.

In October 2024, another devastating explosion occurred in Majiya, Jigawa State, where a fuel tanker overturned, prompting residents to gather and collect the spilling fuel. The tanker exploded during the process, with initial reports citing 94 deaths, while later accounts suggested the toll exceeded 140. The blast also left many injured and caused significant property damage.

Fuel tanker explosions have become a persistent tragedy in Nigeria, frequently linked to poor road conditions, reckless driving, and inadequate enforcement of safety regulations in fuel transportation.

Despite numerous deadly incidents, efforts to implement stricter measures and prevent such catastrophic accidents have remained largely ineffective.
