United triumphed 4-1 over Real Sociedad at Old Trafford, overturning a first-leg deficit to win 5-2 on aggregate.
Fernandes scored twice from the penalty spot and once from open play.
Despite a penalty opener from Mikel Oyarzabal for Sociedad, the visitors’ hopes were dashed after a red card for substitute Jon Aramburu, allowing United to take control.
Diogo Dalot added a fourth for the hosts.
Tottenham, trailing 1-0 after the first leg, bounced back with a 3-1 victory over AZ Alkmaar, thanks to Odobert’s brace and a strike from James Maddison.

In the next round, Manchester United will face Olympique Lyon, who completed a dominant 7-1 aggregate win over FCSB, with two goals each from Georges Mikautadze and Ernest Nuamah.
Spurs will meet Eintracht Frankfurt, who breezed past Ajax with a 6-2 aggregate score, capped by a brace from Mario Götze.
Both Premier League clubs are struggling in the league but still have a shot at European football through the Europa League, which offers a coveted Champions League spot.
Meanwhile, Athletic Bilbao kept their dream of playing the Europa League final at their home stadium alive with a 3-1 win over Roma.
The Spanish side overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit, benefiting from Roma’s early red card to Mats Hummels.
Bilbao now faces Rangers, who won a dramatic penalty shootout 3-2 against Fenerbahce after the aggregate score finished 3-3.
The other quarter-final tie will see Lazio take on Norway’s Bodø/Glimt, who ousted Olympiacos.
